Elwyn “Grandpa Bibs” Shugars, age 84 of Marcellus, MI, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2016 at his family home.
He was born June 15, 1932, in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Elton and Jessie (Nesbitt) Shugars. In 1962 he married Martha L. Medd who survives.
Elwyn was a lifelong resident of Porter Township. He was well known in the community as a farmer and local businessman. He was an active member of government at the local level and served as the Porter Township Treasurer for 28 years. Farming was the way of life for Elwyn. He was a third generation farmer and never had the heart or desire to ever retire. He will always be remembered for his dedication to the fields and commitment to making the most of each day. Along with farming, Elwyn loved his time spent with family. He was so very proud of them and could always count on daily morning gatherings around the kitchen table discussing the happenings of yesterday and the day to come.
Surviving besides his wife Martha of 54 years are four children, Scott (Kathy) Shugars, Kay (Jeff) Klein, Jay (Lynn) Shugars and Patricia Shugars all of Marcellus; four grandsons, Tim (Katrina) Klein, Nicholas (Renee) Seeyle, Brandon Shugars and Devan Shugars; three granddaughters, Brooke (Matt) Osbeck, Shelby (Chad) Earl, and Bryn Shugars; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Andrew.
Cremation has taken place and services will be private. Memorial donations may be directed to Reverance Hospice,348 N. Burdick, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
